I'll be live
blogging it for a while.
4PM: Fred got the first question...he had an
awkward pause. Not impressive. His tone is not forceful and
firm.
4:02: Even Ron Paul sounds forcefull and passionate. He also sounds like he knows what he's talking about as far as the confidence in his tone. He got to in-depth and technical, which is probably good for the wonks, but he probably lost the everyday American.
4:04 McCain talks about health insurance and about reducing costs.
"The fact is that Social Security is going broke. That's a little straight talk and we got to fix it.." "...we got to get wastefull spending under control!"
His last comment got him a round of applause.
4:06 Huckabbee answers a question about the Fairtax. "The fair tax un-taxes productivity"
Matt Lewis, who is also live blogging, had this to say about Chris' question:
This is a typical Keynesian argument, and shows a lack of knowledge on fiscal issues.
4:10 Fred Thompson talks about free trade. "Turning our back on free trade...thats not the direction we want to take."
4:11 Huckabee promises there would be no new taxes under his administration and advocates for the flat tax.
Cutting spending is tough to do because you always have someone pushing back. Thats why you have to change the system.
4:12 Tancredo takes the oath -- no new taxes.
4:16 Romney -- "Im in favor of the line-item veto."
Make sure to check out MK's advice to Thompson.
4:17 A little back and forth heavy debating between McCain and Romney on who lead on cutting taxes. Don't you wish politicians talked like this? HA!
4:20 Fred Thompson interjected with some comments, but I think the CNBC sound guys forgot to turn on his mic for a second. Hard to think CNBC would have a sound guy falling asleep on the job...
4:23 Tancredo got his "illegal immigrants cost us" sound bite in...and got a round of aplause.
4:25 Romney is talking about trade.
We have to recognize agreements have to be in our benefits, not just their (China) benefit ...I want to make sure the American worker gets their fair shake.
4:26 Rudy Guilliani --
I think we are on the verge of going in one direction or the other [Protectionist or real security concerns].
Yes. We have to improve our free-trade agreements.
...bah... I'm going to stop blogging and just watch and listen.
Check out Matt Lewis, who is live blogging.
