Sea-Based Missile Defense “Hit to Kill” Intercept Achieved

More great news on the missile defense front. Check out the awesome picture from the MDA below!!

Here is the press release:

Lieutenant General Henry A. ‘Trey” Obering, Missile Defense Agency (MDA) director, announced the successful completion today of MDA’s latest “hit to kill” intercept flight test conducted jointly with the U.S. Navy off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii.   This was the 28th successful intercept in 36 missile defense tests since 2001.

The test involved a “separating” target, meaning that the target warhead separated from its booster rocket. The event, designated as Flight Test Standard Missile -12 (FTM-12), marked the ninth successful intercept in eleven flight tests for the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Program, the sea-based component of the Agency’s Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS), designed to intercept and destroy short to medium-range ballistic missiles.  All target launches managed by the Missile Defense Agency’s Targets and Countermeasures directorate to support the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System have been successful.

This flight mission was the third intercept involving a separating target and the first time an Aegis BMD-equipped destroyer was used to launch the interceptor missile.  The USS Decatur (DDG 73), using the operationally-certified Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Weapon System (BMD 3.6) and the Standard Missile – 3 (SM-3) Block IA missile successfully intercepted the target during its midcourse phase of flight.

At approximately 4:40 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (10:40 p.m. EDT), a medium-range ballistic missile with a separating target was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. USS Decatur’s Aegis BMD Weapon System detected and tracked the target and developed a fire control solution.

Approximately four minutes later, the USS Decatur’s crew launched the SM-3, and two minutes later the missile successfully intercepted the target warhead outside the earth’s atmosphere more than 100 miles above the Pacific Ocean and 250 miles northwest of Kauai.  The intercept used “hit to kill” technology, meaning that the target warhead was destroyed when the missile collided directly with the target, using no explosives.

An Aegis cruiser, USS Port Royal (CG 73), a Spanish frigate, MÉNDEZ NÚÑEZ (F-104), and MDA’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) mobile ground-based radar also participated in the flight test.  USS Port Royal used the flight test to support development of the new Aegis BMD SPY-1B radar signal processor, collecting performance data on its increased target detection and discrimination capabilities.  MÉNDEZ NÚÑEZ, stationed off Kauai, performed long-range surveillance and track operations as a training event to assess the future capabilities of the F-100 Class. The THAAD radar tracked the target and exchanged tracking data with the Aegis BMD cruiser.

This event marked the third time that an allied military unit participated in a U.S. Aegis BMD test, with warships from Japan and the Netherlands participating in earlier tests.  Japan has committed to deploying SM-3 interceptor missiles aboard its Aegis ships, and is also working with the United States to develop a sea-based interceptor with more advanced capabilities.

MDA and the U.S. Navy cooperatively manage the Aegis BMD Program. Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors of Moorestown, New Jersey is the Combat System Engineering Agent (CSEA) and prime contractor for the Aegis BMD Weapon System and Vertical Launch System installed in Aegis-equipped cruisers and destroyers.  Raytheon Missile Systems of Tucson, Arizona is the prime contractor for the SM-3 missile and all previous variants of Standard Missile.

How to Write Home Run Posts

I found this interesting blog post on how to write better blog posts. It poses some great suggestions.

Most of you are probably familiar with the Pareto Principal, also known as the 80/20 rule. The rule states that 80% of results come from 20% of causes. In blogging this rule is even more extreme (probably 95/5) because of social media. A great post that goes viral, makes the front page of Digg, and is picked up by a top blogger, will easily receive 20 times more traffic, back links, and RSS subscribers than a post that’s merely very good.

Home run posts grow your blog rapidly so it’s important to do everything you can to take a post from good to great. This goes against the popular opinion that short frequent posts are the best strategy. This might work well for blogs that already have a sizable readership, but if you’re just starting out you’ll need to do more to make an impact. This means providing significant value.

Check out the rest of the blog on what constitues a home run post.

Congratulations to The Playful Walrus!!

Heartfelt congratulations are due to Ken, our first blogger here at Townhall.com, who is now the proud dad of a newborn baby daughter, and uses the opportunity to highlight his patriotism, value for life and all-American values.

Congratulations Ken! Cut the blogging and have fun doing the daddy thing. Just make sure to come back and tell us all about it.

Our first child was born this week in Orange County, California to American citizens.

She will be raised bilingual – learning English and another language that is not Spanish.

She and her mother have health insurance.

We thank God that:

-Both mother and daughter are healthy, beautiful, and doing well.

Great stuff in the Blogatorium

I've been reading around the hundreds of Townhall blogs (ok, so I don't actually have the time to read all of them, but I try...) and just discovered some good stuff. Check it out.
A Short List of Liberal Vehicles (An Embassy of Red in a State of Blue.)

I don't know why a large number of people who lean to a certain political philosophy tend to pick certain types of cars. When you see a particular model of car, you can quite often guess what political leaning the driver prescribes to. So I've thought up a list of vehicles, in no particular order, that liberals prefer to drive.
Rob at  The Procrustean discussed philosophy, sexuality, and more.

Having tackled the most obvious example of PostModern sex, we come back to an older debate between Modernists and Dualists: Natural Law, or "can we learn ethics from the birds and the bees"? The topic is ancient, and yet everlastingly relevant. Since we can all agree on the observations, the interpretation or conclusions we draw depend crucially on our metaphysics. The Modernist sees only license, the Dualist limits, and the PoMo evolution.

As usuall, you are free to post comments, or links to your own posts...

Senators Clinton and Boxer & conservative talkradio

Hi Everyone. I've been absent for a while around here as a result of a large amount of non-blogging related work here at Townhall.com. But, I'm back and hope to be sharing the latest and greatest from the Townhall Blogatorium.

The big story today is comments by Senators Clinton and Boxer discussing the need for legislation to curb conservative talk radio. I have featured a few posts on this on the Your Opinion page. Check it out.

MAD at Billy's World Changer News had these thoughts.

Now that the foot is on the other-side those on the left don't want  to follow those rules. Appearing on John Ziegler's evening show on KFI 640 AM in LA, U.S. Senator James Inhofe says he overheard Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) saying they want a "legislative fix" for talk radio.

He has a link to a video clip, so check it out.

DCS67 doesn't hold back in telling us his opinions...and doesn't appreciate someone threatening to curb it. He thinks Liberals Can't Win The War Of Ideas, Without Help That Is....

It seems that talk radio, as well as blogs, podcasts or any grassroots tool, is getting in the way of our "leaders", and they don't much like it. If your voice gets in the way of their agenda, then to hell with your voice.

Dave is reporting that both Clinton and Boxer are doing a hard backpeddal.

Now they both say that he's lying.  Well, not in those terms, but they say the conversation never happened, and that's the same thing.

If you have covered this story, email me -- I'll include it here. Or, you can just join the conversation in the comments. This is, after all, Townhall.com -- Where your opinion counts!
