Mid-Week Blogs Link Roundup at Townhall.com

Here are a few good gems you might want to check out among the thousands of Townhall blogs.

If you are a Hugh Hewitt listener, you probably know about Emmett of the Unblinking Eye. He posted last weekend's box office winners with some comments added. A nice quick movie guide if you are wondering what you missed at the cinema. Also, if you missed it on Friday, he has posted the Top 10 Women Singers Acting Movies of All list.

For reasons that I'm still a little vague on, Mr. Hewitt was heck-bent on having a list of the Top 10 Women Singers Acting Movies of All Time.  But, of course, he was a little vague as to what he exactly meant.  So the list, which appears below, was a mixture of women singers acting and also singing, and women singers acting but not singing.

The Blogatorium's #2 blog, Law, Lawyers, and Politics,  has a post titled The FEC Fined Swift Boats for Truth. I haven't heard anything about this story yet, so Not Legal Roadkill Yet seems to have scoop on this story. We'll see what the networks have to say tomorrow.

Today I learned that the Federal Election Commission has determined that both Moveon.org and Swift Boat Veterans for Truth should have been classified as Political Action Committees and not as 527's, severely limiting the amount of funds they could collect.  The FEC fined four groups just over $600,000 total.

But, politics is not everything, and Sicken throws in his 2 cents on the basketball court  brawl between the Knicks and Nuggets on his post, The Last Straw. He's not a happy fan. Maybe these basketball players need to remember is that its not about them--its about the fans that provide the revenue. Well, thats my 2 cents.

Sicken
:

Even before the latest brawl on the basketball court between the Knicks and Nuggets I decided that I would never pay another penny to attend a professional game. Whether it is football, baseball or basketball, I made up my mind that I would not contribute my money to a bunch of overpriced, overrated punks. I’m sick and tired of being treated like a sucker by the NFL, NBA and MLB.

I love sports. I love to play them and I used to love watching them. I grew up on great Yankee captains like Thurman Munson and Don Mattingly. I idolized Michael Jordan. Walter Payton and Earl Campbell were the greatest running backs I had ever seen. They were all great athletes, good role models and decent men. Now, it sickens me just listening to a few minutes of Sportscenter or anything else on ESPN for that matter.

Dad over at Revie's Ramblings wonders if there is a double standard at airports in regards to how they treat religions? Its a good question, considering past news of praying immans.

Today, while running around, I heard Rush Limbaugh report on an airline that would not let an employee bring a Bible with her on a flight into Saudi Arabia. Here we scream if someone looks at us funny over something religious and an airline makes rules banning religious icons on a flight. That makes no sense.

Christmas is here, and Sam reminisces at the The Weedpatch Gazette about Christmas during World War II.

Those of us who recall Christmas during WWII know that metal toys were scarce due to the war. In fact, many of us children at the time contributed our metal toys for scrap drives. Naturally I don’t know what girls were looking forward to, but one of the first things boys were looking for after the war was cap and BB guns being made available again.

If you are looking for a post to get you into the Christmas spirit, then Granddad and Santa Claus is the post you need to read. If only we had more people like Sam's granddad!

Of course, I want to point out the two job openings we have here at Townhall. We are looking for an experienced C#/ASP.NET developer and a Graphic & Web Designer. If you are a fit, or if you know someone who might be interested, let them know!

Townhall.com is hiring an experienced C#/ASP.NET developer willing to relocate to Richmond, VA. If you or anyone you know wants the chance to work for the best conservative news & opinion site on the web, please send me an email: chris.bower [at] townhall.com.

You can always find more great stories at the Townhall Blogatorium, where every blog post published is displayed in the order it is saved. Also, if you are thinking about catching a flick this weekend, don't forget our Books & Movies section, where we have been updating it on a weekly basis with Michael Medved's movie reviews!

In case this is my last blog post before the holidays, Merry Christmas to all the great Townhall bloggers and readers. May the new year come full of blessings and joy.

Blogger Call to Action: Silly String for Soldiers

I just read this on the Boundless Line blog, and I thought it was worth passing along to all of our Townhall bloggers. This is the kind of thing we can all get behind this Christmas season!

USA Today has a blurb on a story from The Star-Ledger explaining that U.S. soldiers have found that Silly String helps find tripwires attached to bombs planted by insurgents. Before entering a room, the soldiers spray the Silly String to see if it falls to the floor or hangs on something. If it's the latter, they don't go in.

As for baby wipes, Focus on the Family's own Tom Neven, who served seven years as a Marine infantryman, wrote us recently why guys in the field love baby wipes: "Some go a long time between showers, and anything they can clean with (not just their face, either) is greatly appreciated."

To send a care package with these items along with others, click here and choose an organization to help you identify a soldier. For other ways to help, click through the America Supports You website and learn about donating phone cards, frequent flyer miles, gift certificates, etc.

I want to invite all bloggers to post a link to an organization that helps get care packages and other help to our soldiers. There are all sorts of opportunities we should all be taking this Christmas!

Motte, thanks for the idea!

Update: Here is another article with how this got started. Check it out.

World Trade Center on DVD

Just got my own copy of World Trade Center on DVD this afternoon!! Ya! I had the opportunity to see the movie before it came out, and it was awesome! I'm hoping to show it to visiting friends and family.

I'll probably watch it again myself whenever I get tired of politics, and elections, and all the junk that comes out of Washington -- just a quick reminder what elections and governmentds and our liberty really does matter.

If you didn't get to watch it, you cannot miss the chance -- buy your own copy, or at the very least, rent it. The film is a masterpiece -- the kind of movie you would be proud to display on your DVD collection shelf.

According to what I am reading on the DVD here, it has an entire 2nd disk with bonus footage.

From the Archives: What is RSS, Does Townhall Blogs have RSS feeds?

I keep an eye on what many townhall readers search for here at Townhall, and one thing it seems many still look for is information regarding RSS. Here is a post I wrote a few months ago I thought would be worth re-posting for all of our new Townhall.com bloggers.

If you have enjoyed the tips and comments I share here, I invite you to get the latests updates via my very own blog RSS feed found at: http://rss.townhall.com/userblogs/josue

***

We DO offer RSS feeds for all Townhall.com blogs. But wait, there is more! You can subscribe using your favorite RSS aggregator to any one single Townhall columnist, or to all them together, as well as to the Townhall.com blog, or to your favorite Townhall.com user blog.

Here are the different feeds available, and following I provide some basic details as to what RSS is and how it works.

Our Townhall.com Techie provided the following RSS feed links:

Ok, we just about have RSS feeds ready to go... For those of you who are especially anxious, here's a sneak peak

http://rss.townhall.com/columnists/all

http://rss.townhall.com/columnists/ColumnistName
(Switch out ColumnistName for the name of your favorite columnist. For example, http://rss.townhall.com/columnists/hughhewitt)

These are the feeds for all your favorite official Townhall.com blogs.
So, allow me to give some more details about what RSS is and how it works:

RSS is a method through which readers are now able to have news constantly fed to them through their aggregator instead of searching for it or having to visit the web page.

Wikipedia had more:

A program known as a feed reader or aggregator can check a list of feeds on behalf of a user and display any updated articles that it finds. It is common to find web feeds on major websites and many smaller ones. Some websites let people choose between RSS or Atom formatted web feeds; others offer only RSS or only Atom.

Townhall.com offers RSS only, and it offers feed for individual user blogs, a combined feed for all user blogs, and a feed for each columnist--as shown above.

RSS-aware programs are available for various operating systems. Client-side readers and aggregators are typically constructed as stand-alone programs or extensions to existing programs such as web browsers. Browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera and Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 have integrated support for RSS feeds.

Web-based feed readers and news aggregators require no software installation and make the user's "feeds" available on any computer with Web access. Some aggregators combine existing web feeds into new feeds, e.g., taking all football related items from several sports feeds and providing a new football feed. There are also search engines for content published via web feeds like Feedster or Blogdigger.

On Web pages, web feeds (RSS or Atom) are typically linked with the word "Subscribe", an orange rectangle, a feed icon, or with the letters XML or RSS. Many news aggregators such as My Yahoo! publish subscription buttons for use on Web pages to simplify the process of adding news feeds.

I personally use My.Yahoo, where I collect the feeds of my favorite sites. I have also used the Firefox RSS aggregator. Additionally, the Mozila email program Thunderbird also includes an RSS aggregator that pulls in your favorite RSS feeds like if they where an email.

And thats just about it. I hope this gives you a better idea of how you can stay on top of all the important issues and news that matters to you.

Increase Your Readership: Dawnsblood and Keeping Up With The News Cycle

Last night I made an interesting observation. For those who track international news, it so happens that Venezuela was holding its presidential elections.

As I looked through the hundreds of Townhall.com blogs, I was only able to find one blog writing about it -- Dawnsblood. He was actually live blogging last night as various news outlets provided updates through the evening. I found he had links and quotes none of my other usual blogs provided, including a few blogs written from Venezuela. Congratulations to Dawnsblood for the excellent coverage.

My point? One of the best ways to gain frequent new readers is to keep an eye on the news cycle. This is basically "news-speak" for making sure you know what is in the news, and what people are wanting to read about.

Of course, you blog's focus may not be within the scope of a particular event, so I'm not saying you try to be all to everyone. But, I find most of the times, you can find an aspect in almost every newsworthy event that might fit with your blog's focus or angle.

Now, there are two kinds of newsworthy stories you could blog about. There is the already discovered story--that is, the story that someone has brought out, whether it be another blogger, TV, or newspaper. This is probably the kind of story you would be writing about, unless you are a journalist by trade, or have time to dedicate to investigative reporting.

The second kind of news blogging involves original reporting. When I was living in CO, I found it easier to break or write original stories on events or issues I found newsworthy when I focused on my local events or politicians. So, when the CO senator Allard visited my employer, I wrote about it. It was original coverage no other outlet had.

Of course, I know many Townhall bloggers are more of essay bloggers, so some of this may not apply. Nevertheless, I wanted to highlight the fine work Dawnsblood has been doing in keeping up with the news cycle. Of course, you can see by his top position on the Top Ten list that he is getting plenty of readers.

I look forward to reading more and more insight and finding newsworthy quotes and links among the many great Townhall blogs. We are always on the lookout for Townhall bloggers who are staying on top of the news cycle, and writing about their unique perspectives on the news and events of our times.

Happy Blogging!
